Farm Fresh Rhode Island is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in 2004 that is growing a local food system. Farm Fresh RI offers a wide array of access, education, and distribution programs aimed at building healthier communities, increasing access to fresh food, strengthening community-based businesses, and improving the impact of food production and distribution on our environment. Farm Fresh moved into their purpose-designed 60,000 sq. ft. building in the valley neighborhood of Providence in late 2020. In addition to Farm Fresh programs, space is leased out to other food and agriculture related businesses and can be rented for private and public events. Last Saturday, we hosted nearly 150 residents on an unforgettable free trip with @savethebayri 🌊🐠🐟diving into the history, science, and beauty of Narragansett Bay and the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier.

🚢 As part of the Sott’Acqua: @splendorofflorence program, this experience brought us full circle in understanding the Hurricane Barrier and the critical flood mitigation efforts that protect downtown Providence. Participants of all ages, from 2 to 89 discovered:
🌟 How Hurricane Carol (1954) devastated Providence, leading to the construction of the Hurricane Barrier to prevent future storm surges.
🌊 The depth and ecology of Narragansett Bay, one of Rhode Island’s most treasured natural resources.
🌱 The incredible diversity of life in the Bay, including striped bass, blue crabs, quahogs, and oysters, along with the vital ecosystems of eelgrass meadows and salt marshes that support countless species.

This free program, generously sponsored by the @rifoundation Rhode Island Foundation, brought our community together to learn about our waterways’ fascinating history, delicate ecosystems, and their connection to global efforts in protecting and understanding our natural world. It was an incredible day filled with education, connection, and a renewed appreciation for the Bay’s impact on our daily lives.
