Cathedral Square is a distinctive downtown public plaza set in front of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Reimagined in the early 1970s as part of Providence’s urban renewal era, the space is known for its dramatic terraced design, broad concrete steps, and strong architectural character shaped by I. M. Pei’s planning work. Despite its busy location near offices, transit, and downtown streets, it feels somewhat set apart from the surrounding city, giving it a quiet, monumental quality tied closely to the cathedral beside it.
