About the book:
FERN DAUGHTER: A Dreamoir is a work of great creative force that probes the heart and time itself is a central character. In a fairy tale land of mythological ferns, trees granting wishes when approached with just the right words, beneficent storks nesting on thatched roofs, black snakes bringing good luck, and wolves called “God’s dogs,”––all subjects of Dainas, the small northern European country’s repository of thousands of years of lived wisdom––Mara, later known as Fern Daughter, enters the world just as WWll comes crashing in. Named after the primary goddess, who has a donkey’s load of responsibilities including earth mother, goddess of the underworld, protector of children, forest mother, mother of people, mother of spirits, mother of the harvest, milk mother, and giver and taker of life. As if that wasn’t enough, Mara had to find a way to find her way in a rootless and displaced existence, surviving horrific bombing and deprivation, before a stormy ocean crossing lands her on Newport, Rhode Island’s safe shore, where she and her family begin a new life. Mara ultimately overcomes myriad obstacles in the way of her rebellious quest for love and freedom on her cross-country odyssey that takes her to a raucous New York in the 1970s. Fern Daughter speaks to the hopes and dreams of each of us in this crazy world.
